This is a petition to keep Caribbean Twist food establishment/convenience store in operation at 3081 Gottingen Street (civic address 3089) and for the property that Caribbean Twist operates out of to be rezoned or other accommodations to be made that would allow Caribbean Twist to operate as a food establishment.

Halifax Regional Municipality Planning and Development Department originally issued a Notice of Compliance for Caribbean Twist to cease its operations by July 31, 2010. This date has now been changed to August 31, 2010. They state that the property is not zoned for a food establishment, and that it is only zoned for a convenience store. Caribbean Twist has been in operation over a year and bought out the prior business, Toulany’s Lunch Box, which operated for two years at this location also as a food establishment. We have a valid Food Establishment Permit issued by the Province of Nova Scotia, as did Toulany’s Lunch Box. Since we bought out an existing food establishment, we had no knowledge that it was not zoned for the use as a food establishment. HRM has blocked our attempts to even obtain information on how to have the property re-zoned or to make other accommodations for us to be able to continue operating as a food establishment. They originally wouldn’t even grant us a one-month extension while the owners of the property are out of country! But with your voices and the grace of God, our extension was finally granted.

Please let HRM know how important it is to be able to get authentic Caribbean, and in particular, Jamaican food in the city. We are the only establishment that serves Jamaican food in Nova Scotia and except for one restaurant in Fredericton, NB, we are the only Jamaican food establishment east of Quebec. Our clients have voiced their pleasure and satisfaction in being able to get the excellent quality products that only we provide.

Please sign our online petition by leaving a comment below that includes your full name and postal code.

Thank you for your assistance,
Caribbean Twist Inc.
